Take in sweeping views of the Avon Valley at our accommodation in Toodyay

Toodyay in the Avon Valley

Stay on a working farm in the Avon Valley with views of the rolling hills at our Toodyay accommodation. Escape the city without having to travel very far at all, at our off-grid cabins that are just over an hour drive from the Perth CBD.

Stargaze the clear skies away from the city light pollution and wake up to birdsong or magical misty mornings in the cooler weather. You might even catch a glimpse of the sheep and cattle on the property as they rest and graze in nearby paddocks.

The name Toodyay comes from the Noongar word Dudja, meaning ‘mist’. It was named after the misty mornings in the Noongar season Makuru (June – July), and sometimes in Djilba (August-September). For over 40,000 years, the Noongar Ballardong, Yued, and Whadjuk tribes have travelled over Toodyay Valley. It was a place of gathering, hunting, meeting and trading, land management and cultural responsibilities during the six Noongar seasons.

Things to do in the Avon Valley

You’ll find the historic town of Toodyay, just a 15-minute drive from your accommodation. The buildings are reminiscent of the early convict era, surrounded by picturesque countryside and scenic hillsides.

The town has a range of quirky artisanal stores, cafes, two pubs, an award-winning bakery and a Christmas shop that’s open all year round.

If you’re getting off-grid with the entire family, you can enjoy a local outdoor experience at the Hoddywell Archery Park, Sandalwood Downs Family Farm, and the Free Range Emu Farm. On weekend mornings the local playground at Duidgee Park also has volunteers running a mini railway track.

Hot Air Ballooning at sunrise is an Avon Valley experience not to miss. Take in the beautiful views and enjoy peacefully floating through the air with an expert team.

The natural waterfall, Noble Falls is located just a 30-minute drive from your accommodation and is dog friendly. If you’re travelling with your canine companion and want to get in some exercise, there is a 3.5km walking trail that is waymarked from the Noble Falls carpark. The surrounding area is surrounded by beautiful jarrah, marri, and blackbutt bushland, with picnic and barbecue areas available. If you want to grab a drink and a bite while you’re there, Noble Falls Tavern also welcomes dogs and is conveniently located just across the road.

If making the most of your time in an area is your thing, we’d recommend taking a quick day trip to the nearby towns. Northam is a 20-minute drive from town and the historic town of New Norcia is about an hour drive away—both with that quirky small town charm that we all love.

Tess’s story

WHERE WE STAYED

We stayed at cabin Daisy!

OUR TRIP

The excitement began building from the moment I unhinged the gate of the long driveway of the rural property on the approach to Daisy. Jumping back in the car after closing the gate behind us, we navigated the twists and turns of the unsealed road, getting more excited at each sign we saw urging us onwards towards Daisy. The welcoming party was prepared for our arrival –

– we saw kangaroos in the bush as we neared the end of our journey. There she sat, on top of the hill, waiting for our arrival – my first tiny cabin stay in the cute-as-a-button Daisy.

My husband started dutifully unpacking the car as I tore inside and excitedly explored every nook of Daisy. She had all the creature comforts we needed for our 2-night stay in January – including blissfully cool air-con as we were facing 40-degree C temperatures the next day.

Celebrating our arrival and first night in Daisy, we chinked our wine glasses whilst sitting on the teal blue little table and chairs, gazing over rolling fields of cropped pastures and a few sheep in the distance as the sun began to set and the paddocks began to reflect a golden glow with the last light of the day.

WHAT WE DID

I was excited to explore the quaint and historical town of Toodyay the next day. Make sure to visit the Toodyay Bakery – it has some of the best pies and other baked goodies I’ve had in Western Australia! The town has its quirky attractions, such as the Christmas 360 store (featuring Christmas decorations all year round!) and the Coca-Cola Museum Café. I’d recommend the worthwhile 5-minute detour out of town to visit Coorinja Winery – one of the oldest wineries in the state! Pick up a bottle and head back to Daisy to cook up a storm for dinner.

Thanks Heyscape for our delightful staycation!
